Jardim Agrocola Tropical (Tropical Agricultural Garden)
Situated in Belem, this garden was formed with the aim of studying
the flora in the old Portuguese colonies. Today it has a large
assortment of tropical plants as well as some palms from Madeira
Jardim Botanico da Ajuda (Ajuda Botanical Garden)
Situated by the Palacio Nacional da Ajuda, this is the oldest garden
in Portugal – the Marques de Pombal had it planted in 1768.
It has been undergoing redecoration, preserving its unique botanical
aims while presenting itself as a leisure space.
Jardim das Amoreiras (Amoreiras Gardens)
The real name of these grounds is Marcelino Mesquita, it got its
name after the poet writer (of the same name). When inaugurated
in 1759 by the Marques de Pombal, there were 331 amoreiras (mulberry
trees), with the intention of inspiring the Portuguese factory
close to the square. The little garden has ten different varieties’ of
trees, as well as some left over mulberry trees.
Parque da Bela Vista (Bela Vista Park)
Transformed from an old farm in the east of the city in 1991, the
park has reserved its rural feel with large wooded areas. These
days a group of pathways access to a picnic area and a miradouro
(belvedere), with an incredible view over the city and the river
Tagus. Close by are multi-sports and bathing areas, as well as
a golf course.
Parque Eduardo VII (Edward VII Park)
Situated at the north end of the Avendia da Liberdade, this park
marked a transform in the urban growth of the city. It was initially
named after the avenue, until King Edward VII of England visited
Lisbon in 1903. As well as presenting a great view over the city,
there is heaps to do here. On each side of its large area of
lawn and pathways, there are unusual plants, areas for sports,
entertainment and eating. At the northwestern end is the Estufa
Fria where you can see all kinds of uncommon plants
Parque Florestal de Monsanto (Monsanto Forest Park)
At roughly 1,000 hectares (2470 acres), this is Lisbon’s
biggest green space. Not the kind of place you go for a leisurely
walk, it is wise to go by means of a car and in company, with something
planned. The park has a large campsite, mini golf, tennis courts,
swimming pool, amphitheatre, shops and restaurant, and exhibition
center and outdoor activities for children.
